Taking Charge of Your Health & Safety

seniors on swing Taking Charge educates and motivates older adults about everyday decisions which lead to a healthy, independent life. Practicing daily health habits prevents chronic illness and saves money.

Taking Charge workshops for senior groups are conducted by trained Extension educators, community leaders, healthcare providers, and WVU students. Workshops focus on these topics: Be Active, Eat Smart, Heart Health, Diabetes, Arthritis, and Prevent Falls. Programs feature educational take-home materials, including tools for home safety assessments, and exercises to enhance flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance.

Here’s what some participants say about Taking Charge.

“[My mother] definitely benefited. We were able to make her bathroom safe and accessible.”

“Taking Charge may have saved my life. I was experiencing some signs of heart trouble. I went to the doctor and was taken in right away to have an angioplasty and stent.”
